Aug 01, · Fall under the spell of Wake—the first book in an achingly beautiful new series by celebrated author Amanda Hocking—and lose yourself to the Watersong. Gorgeous. Fearless/5. ‘Wake’ is a word that speaks of both beginnings and endings; of the very first moment of a new day, and of the final ritual at the end of a life. It suits Anna Hope’s first novel, a compelling account of lives that had been changed by the Great War, so very well/5. The first book in this three-book series, Wake, follows the story of a seventeen-year-old girl named Janie who is blessed(or cursed) with the ability to visit other peoples' dreams. The negative side of this is the fact that she is constantly sucked into dreams that she does not want to see or be a part of/5. Written in what Kingsnorth describes as a shadow version of old English, "The Wake" is an interesting book about the aftermath of the Norman invasion of England, as well as the Saxon resistance. It takes a while to get into the flow of the language, though it's worth the 4/5.
